The Competition

These championships will be a key moment in identifying the rising gymnastic stars of tomorrow, and who will be making their mark in the Olympic Games three years later.

British gymnasts are increasingly excited about the event, especially with such potential having been proved in Beijing. Some of those to watch out for are:

  • Louis Smith who made Olympic history by being the first British gymnast to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games for 100 years. Louis showed his prowess in the Pommel Horse Final by bringing home a Bronze medal from Beijing.
  • British Juniors made a sensation at the 2008 European Championships by winning the team title, with Daniel Keatings becoming the star of the competition in Lausanne with 4 gold medals.
  • Beth Tweddle broke the records with her 2006 World and European titles on A. Bars, and narrowly missed a medal in Bejing by finishing in 4th place.
  • Becky Downie who finished the Women’s All-around Final in Beijing in a record 12th place, following a tiebreak with the 2006 World Champion Vanessa Ferarri (ITA).
  • The GBR Womem's Team took a record 7th place in the 2007 World Championships leading to the Olympic Final in Beijing where they took 9th place.
